the truth about entrepreneur’s and their ‘friends’

Jul 17

entrepreneur’s (those self-employed) have 3 types of friends. but before we move on, it’s important that you read this to understand my casual definition of an entrepreneur.

we have:

  1. Friends (we love & would die for) – those who understand us when we say “if i don’t work, i don’t eat” and don’t try to give you a guilt trip when you can’t hang with them. these friends respond with “i understand. is there anything i can help with?”
  2. friends (we frequently tolerate in very small doses) – those who call us workaholics because we can’t play, talk, chat, run the streets, etc. when they want to. they respond with “urgh. you work too much!’
  3. “friends” (we infrequently tolerate in larger doses) – it’s just business (but they don’t really know it – unless they’re running the same game – which is ok because we respect that – which increases their chance of moving up the friend chain game). these are the people you meet at social/networking events and “friend” on facebook or follow on twitter but would never invite on a road trip or call for drinks (without an agenda).

ok, it may not be nice or fair, but it’s the truth that no one will openly admit. and guess what? it’s ok.

you may not be self-employed but i’d bet my life on the fact that you’re using someone for something.

  • think about that fake smile you plaster on your face everyday when you see your boss because you want to continue to get paid (but talk about them behind their back).
  • how about the girl/guy you’re using for sex or a free meal?
  • and what about the flirty voice you use when trying to get your way with your insurance agent or the bartender?

so don’t judge. we all do it. i just thought i’d let you in on a little secret. the truth!
