a couple of weeks ago, i traveled from utah to phoenix. stopping in vegas i decided to check out the Fremont Street Experience.
and oh, what an experience it was! it taught me a lot about sales and trust.
my main goal was to get some video of the light show for friends back home who have never visited las vegas. instead, most of my night was rejecting job offers from pimps and watching prostitutes.
i’ve been to vegas hundreds of times, but this was my first time hanging out on fremont street. after about 5 minutes, i realized fremont street wasn’t the strip. so i strolled into starbucks, ordered a chai, ventured outside to their patio area and watched…
10 minutes into my 2nd favorite pastime (my 1st being flirting), i was approached by 3 pimps. i should have headed inside to safety, but i couldn’t pull myself away. i was in awe as i watched the prostitutes work their magic (aka sales pitches) on the men strolling by.
i wondered about their closing ratio. i wondered about the men they befriended. i wondered if these men left their rooms with the intent of meeting a new friend. i wondered about the men that followed these women into the casinos, past the slot machines, desk clerks, up elevators into rooms of the unknown. i wondered if there were moments of sanity when the men thought,
i shouldn’t be doing this.
regardless of deeply held values, wives or the law – man, after man, after man stopped and chatted (and some followed) the women. during my watch, i noticed how engaging and charismatic these women were. despite their shape, size or color – they were able to get in the head of these men in less than 3 minutes and influence rational judgment. some of you would argue that it’s about the sex and that’s all men think about.
you’re wrong – it’s about trust!
those prostitutes got the men, (really johns at that point) to trust they wouldn’t be arrested, robbed or murdered after following them into rooms and down alleys…
now THAT is a ‘trust agent’!
